Netflix and Kill!

Updated: Feb 20, 2020

No, it’s not a typo. What’s with the young girls and women obsessing over characters playing roles of a serial killer? Well, I know the answer to that question, so allow me to sort this out for you in a very simple way, but first, let us jump into a quick intro of the blogger. I remember the day I started binge watching shows on Netflix which was not very long ago, and at that very moment I knew I would never stop.

Although, it’s very rare for me to get excited about a show and it’s funny how the most recent shows I was fascinated by were all related to murderers. Let me also tell you that I am not a fan of thrillers because the way such shows and movies are structured really affects me psychologically in not a very pleasant way, however, I watched them anyway and that’s a very big deal for a person with Phobophobia.

Now let’s get back to the females belonging to the Netflix community and understand why they get fascinated by human killers. I propose a theory that is solely based on a women’s perspective. I call it the “You’ve got to be in it to hate it” theory, and is particularly seen among females belonging to late teen years and young adult period. This theory tells us about females who sympathize with serial killers such as stalkers, and as weird as it might sound, it is the truth. The reason behind this has something to do with how a woman is raised socially and is expected to possess the quality of being more compassionate than men. Thus, the character stalking a woman just becomes an over-possessive passionate lover rather than a mentally unstable human killer. Females perceive the character's acts as real love and a strong desire to achieve it, however, we forget that there is a thin line between sane love and an insane one. Recently, the attitude towards such a character was misleading to the extent where a Netflix series star had to mention in one of his tweets that the character he was playing was not someone to be obsessing about.

This theory tells us how a women can get so excited and involved in the murders happening on-screen because they know that it is highly unlikely for that to happen to them. A feeling of security is generated within females as they delve deep into the show and try to relate it to their current surroundings knowing they are safe. Wait! There’s one more reason why people in general like to watch serial killer shows and that is because they are unable to understand the reason behind a killer’s motives and they stick till the end to actually discover the psychology behind such cruel acts done by one human being to another.

Whatever the reason might be, one thing I know for sure is that thrillers are something we will be seeing a lot this year and maybe in the coming 3-5 years too; as the genre stands for itself for making the viewers more engaged into the whimsical content it has to offer.
